PVC Overmolding

Polyvinyl chloride, commonly referred to as PVC, is a thermoplastic material that is extensively utilized. This material is recognized for its strength, excellent flammability, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance. Furthermore, PVC possesses strong dielectric properties, outstanding weather resistance and impact resistance, as well as good dimensional stability. Its tensile strength is approximately 6500 psi.

PVC thermoplastic polymer is an excellent choice for various applications because it can be used with all types of hardness testers, including both soft and hard flexible stiffness. Due to their outstanding dimensional stability, PVC of all types and grades are ideal for use in injection molding processes.

Attention Points of PVC Overmolding

1

Mold: In the PVC Overmolding process, materials that can withstand corrosion and high temperatures will be employed. Alternatively, the surface of the mold will undergo treatment with chrome plating and nitriding. It is essential to regularly clean the mold's surface during mass production, and maintenance must be carried out subsequently.

2

Materials: Prior to manufacturing and processing, raw materials must undergo a hot air drying process for a duration of two hours, with a requisite temperature of 80°C. This is necessary because the materials cannot be stored effectively because of the moisture.

3

Equipment: It is essential to establish a separate injection molding machine during PVC manufacturing and processing to prevent material retention and heat decomposition.

4

Forming time: Typically, the development process lasts for a little over 80 seconds. At least 20 seconds should be given to allow the molding process.

Molding Method And Products for PVC Overmolding

Extrusion molding and products

PVC extruded products can be categorized into two types: soft goods and hard goods. Soft products are typically made from high-molecular weight PVC resin and can be easily molded using a single screw extruder. Another category is hard goods, which can be produced using either a single or twin screw extruder and are typically made from PVC resin with a relatively low molecular weight. Examples of hard goods include hard tubes, hard plates, and hard profiles.

Injection molding and products

Injection molding requires more liquid, making the process more challenging. The majority of UPVC products employ PVC resin with a comparatively low molecular weight in order to decrease the molding processing temperature. Injection molding products can be divided into two main categories: shoe and pipe fittings.

Calendaring molding and products

The main end product of the rolling forming process is SPVC calendered film. Medical devices such as blood transfusion bags and infusion bags are made from PVC resin and non-toxic additives in the form of rolled films.

FAQs of PVC Overmolding

What Is the PVC Materials?

PVC is a thermosensitive plastic that can decompose rapidly if overheated or over-sheared.

What Substrates Can Be Overmolded With PVC?

PVC overmolding can be applied to various substrates, including metals (such as aluminum, steel, and brass), plastics (such as ABS, polycarbonate, and nylon), rubber, and even other PVC parts. The compatibility of the substrate with PVC will depend on its melting point, thermal stability, and surface characteristics.

Is PVC Overmolding An Environmentally-Friendly Process?

PVC overmolding can be environmentally-friendly, depending on the specific materials and manufacturing practices employed. PVC itself can be recycled, and manufacturers can utilize sustainable sourcing and production methods to minimize its environmental impact. Additionally, the durability and longevity of PVC overmolded parts can contribute to a reduction in overall waste and resource consumption.
